A man strolled down a popular shopping street with only a mask to cover his nudity, leaving passerbys amused and shocked.

The incident happened on Oxford Street in London on Friday (24 July), the date face masks became compulsory in shops across the country.

As the man walked naked along Oxford Street, with only a face mask covering his groin, some took pictures on their phones while others simply stared.

It was unclear what prompted the stunt, but masks became compulsory in shops, takeaways and banks from Friday, in addition to public transport, to battle the spread of Covid-19.

Brawls have even broken out in supermarket aisles across England, as shoppers confront each other for not wearing masks, while staff at a McDonald’s kicked out diners for not covering their faces.

However, some high street chains have said they will not penalise customers who fail to wear masks.

Sainsbury’s, Asda, Co-Op and Costa Coffee are among the firms saying they would not police the coronavirus rules. McDonald’s, on the other hand, are enforcing the rules, with customers in a Chelmsford, Essex branch ordered to leave for not wearing a mask.

Police can hand out £100 fines to people in shops who flout the rules. However, the College of Policing has said officers “should only be required as a last resort”.
