Man rapes elderly woman in her Leicester home

A man who broke into a woman’s house and raped her has pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court

Virgil Arhip was arrested an hour after he had carried out the horrific attack, wearing the victims jeans.

The attack happened in the South Leicester area during the early hours of 19 July. Arhip, 28, broke into the victims home before raping her.

The victim, who is in her 60s, immediately reported the incident to police.

Police attended the scene and provided support to the victim, while other officers were sent out to carry out initial enquiries.

The woman gave officers a detailed description of Arhip and also told them he left the scene wearing jeans belonging to the her.

A search was immediately carried out of the surrounding area and Arhip was identified in an adjoining street.

He was arrested at the scene and initially denied the offence in an interview. However, due to evidence gathered against him, he was charged the same day.

Arhip appeared at Leicester Crown Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to one count of rape and one count of burglary.

He has been remanded into custody and is due to be sentenced on 16 October.

Detective Inspector Gareth Goddard said: “This was a truly harrowing and appalling attack on a woman in her own home.”

“Thanks to the extreme bravery of the victim and the swift actions and tenacious work of all officers involved – from those taking the initial emergency call and attending the scene to those who assisted in a thorough and dedicated investigation – Arhip has pleaded guilty to these horrendous crimes.”

“Although this does not change what happened, I hope it is of some support to the victim that the defendant has accepted responsibility in court.”
