Man found guilty of murdering his estranged partner in Leicester

A man has been found guilty of murdering his estranged partner in a violent attack in Leicester.

Bhavini Pravin, 21, was stabbed in her home on Moores Road in the Belgrave area of the city.

Jigukumar Sorthi, 23, was found guilty of her murder today (Friday 11 September) at Leicester Crown Court following a trial lasting two weeks.

The incident took place at around midday on 2 March. Sorthi went to the address to speak to his estranged partner. The conversation only lasted a few minutes before the jilted man stabbed the victim multiple times in front of her mother.

He then left the property minutes later.

Emergency services were called to the address where Miss Pravin was sadly pronounced deceased.

Less than two hours after the incident, Sorthi approached an officer outside Spinney Hill Police Station and made admissions implicating himself in the stabbing.

A post-mortem examination was carried out and concluded Miss Pravin died as a result of multiple stab wounds.

Detective Inspector Kenny Henry was the senior investigating officer. He said: “This was a vicious attack on a defenceless young woman.”

“Bhavini Pravin was 21 years old with her whole life ahead of her, instead it has been cruelly taken away by an act so brutal it doesn’t bear thinking about.”

“Her family have said that a light has gone out in their lives and remain devastated by her death.”

Sorthi will be sentenced on Wednesday 16 September
