M1 in Leicestershire closed until this evening after serious crash

The northbound carriageway of the M1 in Leicestershire will remain shut until this evening after a serious crash.

The collision happened at 11.20pm last night near Junction 23 of the motorway, and involved an Audi and a Range Rover.

The crash has left one passenger with life-threatening injuries. Another driver has also been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

The injured passenger was in the back of the Range Rover at the time of the collision.

The motorway was initially closed in both directions, however the southbound carriageway was reopened early this morning. The northbound carriageway remains closed.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “The M1 Northbound from J22 to J23 will remain closed until early evening. Please seek alternative routes.”

“If you need to travel north, you will need to exit at J21 and find a different route to re-join at J24.”

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the crash and anyone with information is urged to contact Leicestershire Police.
