The M1 was closed in both directions this morning due to a lorry fire.

The incident happened at around 6am this morning on the southbound carriageway, between Junction J21A and J21 for Fosse Park.

All traffic was stopped while fire crews and traffic officers dealt with the incident.

The incident caused heavy traffic, both on the motorway itself and the roads joining the M1.

Highways England said the recovery and repair work was ongoing and drivers were advised to avoid the area if they can. A crane was brought in to recover the lorry.

They also posted this picture of the burnt out lorry from the incident.

The northbound carriageway has now reopened. Two lanes remain closed on the M1 southbound, with “traffic flow better but still disrupted”.
