Lockdown to continue in Leicester and Oadby & Wigston

The localised lockdown will continue in the city of Leicester and the borough of Oadby & Wigston, Matt Hancock has confirmed today.

The restrictions will be removed from other areas of the county such as Glenfield, Thurmaston and Birstall.

The 7-day infection rate for Leicester now stands at 119 cases per 100,000 people, which is lower than the 135 per 100,000 when the local lockdown was first announced.

Some restrictions will be lifted for shops to reopen, with “local power” given to close non-essential retail where necessary.

But restrictions on travel and only having social-distanced gatherings of up to six people will remain in force.

Testing has doubled in the city since the local lockdown was introduced, along with focused communications to all members of the community.
