Some lockdown restrictions eased in Leicester ahead of new review today

Some lockdown restrictions in Leicester are being eased, ahead of a new formal review later today.

This will allow the reopening of outdoor theatres and pools, which were allowed to reopen in the rest of the country in July. Beauty salons, nail bars and tattoo parlours can also reopen, for non-facial treatments only.

However the city, along with other areas of northern England, must still restrict household gatherings and some leisure activities such as bowling and indoor play areas cannot resume. This means residents can still not meet up with family or friends (apart from those in their support bubbles) in private homes or gardens.

Leicester South MP Jonathan Ashworth said health minister Nadine Dorries wrote to him on Friday advising that the easing of restrictions that took place nationally on 11 and 13 July would now be allowed in Leicester.

The infection rate in the city has fallen considerably to 56 per 100,000 people, significantly lower than its peak of 140 at the end of June. However, it is still much higher than the national average.

The findings of the formal review were expected on Friday, however this has now been moved to later today.
