Leicester passes 10,000 coronavirus case milestone

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Leicester exceeded 10,000 yesterday, after the latest figures were released by Public Health England.

The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic now stands at 10,045 in the city, with 1,023 new cases confirmed over the last week.

Leicester’s seven-day coronavirus infection rate is now at the highest points it’s ever been – with more infections confirmed than when it was put into lockdown in June.

In the wider county, the total number of cases stands at 9,469, with the highest cases in the boroughs of Charnwood and Oadby & Wigston.

The latest data for each area is as follows:

Leicester: 10,045 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 2,835 

Charnwood: 3,145 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 1,692 

Blaby: 1,469 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 1,446 

Harborough: 980 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 1,044 

Oadby and Wigston: 1,262 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 2,213

Hinckley and Bosworth: 1,245 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 1,100 

Melton: 492 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 960

North West Leicestershire: 876 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 845 

Across the UK, there have been more than 890,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus and nearly 45,000 deaths linked to the infection.
