Government announces changes in Leicester lockdown rules

The Government has announced a further easing of local lockdown restrictions in Leicester.

The Department of Health and Social Care has announced that swimming pools, gyms, indoor sports courts, fitness suites and dance studios can reopen from Tuesday 8 September.

Council leisure centres will also be reopening on a phased basis from 14 September.

However, restrictions preventing residents to meet up with family and friends (apart from those in their support bubbles) in private homes and gardens remains in place.

Facial treatments in beauty salons are still not allowed, and some businesses including bowling alleys, casinos and soft play areas must remain closed.

Shielding for people who are clinically vulnerable is also being extended in Leicester until at least 23 September. Letters will be going out from the government this weekend to those affected.

The easing of restrictions follows the city’s coronavirus infection rates falling significantly, moving from the highest to the 24th highest in the country.

The rolling seven-day rate of new cases of Covid-19 in the city stands at 25.1 cases per 100,000 with 89 new cases in the week (as at August 29).

The next government review of Leicester’s restrictions will take place on 11 September.
