Footbridge over Burleys Way to be demolished

A footbridge in Leicester city centre is due to be demolished next month as part of a major revamp of the area.

The footbridge on Burleys Way, opposite St Margaret’s Bus Station, was built in the 1970s. It is being removed as part of a £10 million scheme to regenerate the city centre, which includes the new bus station and better cycling and walking connections.

The bridge is in poor condition, with ageing concrete and leaking in places. A more accessible street-level crossing point is available for pedestrians.

The scheme also includes the demolition and redevelopment of the St Margaret’s bus station, and the introduction of a super crossing along with other pedestrian and cycle improvements.

The bridge will be removed in October, with temporary road and lane closures in place during the works.

A survey carried out in 2019 revealed that about 1,000 people each day use the bridge, with the same number using the street-level road crossing nearby.

The work is expected to cost about £135,000 in total, and is funded by the Transforming Cities Fund award.

Leicester City Mayor Peter Soulsby said redevelopment work around St Margaret’s Bus Station will bring the area up to “modern standards”, improving accessibility and the regeneration of the area.
